A Light At The End Of The Tunnel

Why build a wind tunnel?

Mercedes Benz felt the need for speed and built not just one wind tunnel but two wind tunnels that are specifically designed to recreate extreme weather conditions at their indoor facility at Sindelfingen. The climatic extremes of -40C to 60C temperatures together with simulated hurricanes, heavy snowstorms and tropical rainfall are all included in the repertoire and for good measure the wind speed will go to a maximum of 265 km/h.

These new toys for the Mercedes Benz engineers to play with will enable them to create and test new vehicles and components under every possible weather condition they could ever experience in the real world.  Potential problems in design or composition will now be able to be recognised early in the new car development process.

Both tunnels will be capable of testing a wide range of vehicles in the saloon and sports car category and will have a specially integrated twin-axle roller dynamometer at drive speeds up to 265 km/h.  The cold tunnel will be used for conducting tests between -40C and 40C temperature range.  The hot tunnel will operate with a temperature range of -10C to 60C.

Mercedes believe that in the future,  prototypes of their vehicles will only make it out onto the road for road testing after they have reached an advanced development stage through vigorous testing in their extreme conditions wind tunnel facility.

Hey Burnie Is Formula 1 Becoming A Joke … Tony Coen

This past weekend is a big weekend for me here in Australia. The primary event is the big Bathurst meeting for the V8 supercars and while I have visited the track many times for the race it is best seen on a big screen TV. The race is a battle between two brands of V8 over a distance eof 1,000 Km. It takes around 6 hours to run and these specially built salon cars are doing speeds up to 300 kph  around a difficult mountain track.

The tension throughout the race is unbelievable as pressure is applied by every one of the more than 30 entrants keen to make a name for themselves as a winner of this prestige race. On average a car does 26 laps on a set of tyres but in this race two drivers literally drove the tyres off their cars in just 13 laps as they fought each other for a podium position. The standard of driving is 100% full on for 161 laps with the winner relaxing to 98% 500 meters from the finish so his teammate could come alongside for a formation finish.

As soon as the race finished I switched channels to watch the Formula 1 race from Japan. I follow Mark Weber of course and I am over the moon that Mark finally has a good team behind him and he is in with a shot to get the world title. But after watching this race I need to ask some questions Bernie.

Do the drivers draw straws to see who is going to win and take the first 10 places and then drive around in the “Parade” you are calling a race?

Why is it the drivers can drive fastest laps at will?

Why is it that the driver coming second in the race can drive a significantly faster lap than the driver that wins the race – right at the time that he wants to drive a fastest lap?

Are we seeing the best performance from these world class drivers or has this become a show like World Championship Wrestling?

After watching real world class drivers giving their best for 6 hours in the Bathurst race I felt very let down watching your circus Bernie. We pay the money for your extravagent life style – we buy the products that your sponsors sell – we buy the cars and we deserve something a little bit better than the farce I watched in Japan today.

Let the drivers drive on their abilities and may the best man win
