2010 Model Jaguar XJ Sedan – Supercar … Tony Coen

Looking more like a sporty GT car than a Jaguar sedan the sumptuous new XJ sedan is the brain child of the incredible motor car designer Ian Callum. The new design is a far cry from the classical Jaguar look and has finally brought the brand into the 21st century.

The car will not be released until mid 2010 and there are several very sporty versions but I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the 3 litre V6 twin turbo. Absolutely stunning would be an understatement – this car will set trends that will be followed by other motor vehicle designers for years to come. This model V6 delivers 600Nm of torque but there are 3 different models based on the Jaguar 5 Litre direct injection petrol V8 two of which are supercharged. This engine develops 375 Kw/625Nm using just 12.1 litres of petrol per 100km traveled.

The sleek lines of this sedan remind me of a cat ready to pounce and the grill/front end arrangement suggests a very aggressive cat to say the least. The doors are large providing comfortable entry and exit and the rear windscreen seems to extend right to the tail of the car. The tail lights look like cat claws completing the illusion that this is one very sleek Jaguar. For a heavy car weighing in at just under 2,000kg it got to 100km/h in under 5 seconds.

The XJ body and chassis is constructed entirely from aluminium and the joins are made using a special resin and rivets. This gives a 150kg weight advantage over the direct competitors not using this spaceframe construction method. Ian Callum must have spent many an hour or two on the wind tunnel tests because this car is aerodynamic, slicing through the air at 0.29Cd. The rear leg room in the long wheel base version is suitable for adults and this model is ideal if you have a chauffeur although I would be having a debate over who would drive and who would luxuriate in the back seat splendor.

In the drivers seat the instruments are stylish and in line with the latest contemporary design trends. Virtual instruments and gauges will fade out to reveal multiple information panels. The sound system is extraordinary and pumps out 1,200 watts into more than 20 loudspeakers. There is a hard disk library system for both audio and video and a dual view video system so that rear seated passengers can watch a different video.

The dashboard fascia can be supplied in typical Jaguar timber veneer as well as metallic or piano black and sports a sweeping crescent shaped instrument cluster. A 20cm touch screen supplies you with information including climate control, global positioning, sound system and the all important shock absorber/chassis adjustments.

The ride is comfortable due to the air suspension and continuously adaptive damping and the handling is sensational help along by the active differential and a quick steering ratio. Priced at around A$200,000 for the V6 model this car will be widely accepted in the luxury market.
