Ford Fiesta ECOnetic ….. by Tony Coen

Ford Fiesta ECOnetic

Ford Australia, without much fanfare at all, has released the most fuel efficient car in Australia, beating all rivals including the petrol/electric hybrids. Burning just 3.7 litres of fuel to drive 100Km this surpasses all other cars available in Australia. And if that wasn’t enough for you to become ecstatic about this superb little car then try this one on for size. The ECOnetic carbon dioxide emission rating is 98g/100Km so it actually produces less carbon dioxide than any other internal combustion engine. There is only one other vehicle that has come in with figures below the much aspired 100g/100kKm.

Ford Australia has signalled that they are truely committed to leading the way in fuel economy and they intend to make all introduce fuel efficency as a goal in the production of all vehicles for both the local market and export markets. Martin Burela, the Ford Australia boss said “Ford is looking at a wide range of technology solutions to meet the sustainability challenge and the ECOnetic is just one example of this. We (Ford) are intent on delivering affordable and accessible vehicles to our customers.”

“Fiesta ECOnetic perfectly balances a stylish, affordable car thats just is environmentally friendly without compromising the style or modern technology that has made the Fiesta one of the world’s most popular small cars.” Martin Burela said. Priced at just below Au$25,000 it is sure to be a big seller in Australia. The ECOnetic looks and operates just the same as the conventional Fiesta but uses the latest common rail diesel technology. The 1.6 litre engine develops 66kW at 4,000 revs (rpm) and peak torque of 200Nm is reached at just 1,750 revs.

The car has a five star safety rating and a long list of both active and passive safety features. Enough airbags for driver and passengers to make the car float if it were ever in the drink along with emergency brake assist, anti lock brakes, dynamic stability control and traction control. There is a nifty shift indicator light on the instrument panel that lets you know the optimal time to change gear to achieve the best fuel economy.
