Kia Sorento CRDi …. by Tony Coe

Motoring Tips and Reviews
Guide To The Kia Sorento

The previous model of the Kia Sorento was well accepted by the motoring public and rightly so because it was an excellent small 4WD car and tremendous value for money. When I had a look at the new Platinum model this week it was going to have big shoes to fill because I had been so impressed with the older model. I was not disappointed as Kia have taken the Sorento into a new era of the flashm business class vehicles.

The performance of the Platinum CRDi is simply astonishing and I was left with my mouth agape and my jaw flapping. The powerplant is a 2.2 Litre, four cylinder turbo-diesel that delivers more power and torque than some competitor 3.0 litre models. The transmission in the vehicle that I drove was a six speed automatic and it made driving an absolute pleasure. Some critics have gone so far as to say that this Sorento Platinum engine is the smallest, lightest and most powerful diesel engine in the world.

The width of the Sorento Platinum has remained unchanged from the previous model but the length has been increased by 95mm making it now 4,685mm and the ground clearance has been lowered by 15mm making it not so good for use off road but the people buying these vehicles very seldom use them off road. The new model does not have a low range but with the six speed automatic gearbox I found that 1st gear provided me with enough power and control for what I required.

The traditional style ladder frame chassis has also been dispensed with in favour of the newer styled “monocoque” design made popular by the formula one car designers. The Sorento comfortably seats seven people and the prices in Australia range from $36,490 to $48,990. The thing that really impressed my wife when she drove the Sorento was that she found it easy to get in and out and that it was very user friendly including the reversing camera that operates as soon as you engage reverse and displays and LCD image in the rear view mirror.
