Volkswagen’s Golf GTi ….. by Tony Coen

Motoring Tips Review Of The Volkswagen Golf GTi

The sixth generation of the Volkswagen Golf has certainly evolved into a very sporty little affair. It is an excellent package of safety features, great style and true sports performance at an affordable price. The basic 3 door model sells for just under A$39,000 with manual transmission but my favourite model is the 5 door with the direct shift gearbox for just over A$5,000 more.

While the GTi has a little less power and torque than some of its rivals the front wheel drive of the GTi makes the car more responsive and a much more thrilling car to drive. The sports calibrated suspension together with a lockable differential and lower ride height makes sure the car goes where you point the nose.

The power plant is a 2.0 litre four cylinder, direct injection turbo driving the wheels through a six speed direct shift automatic gearbox that makes driving this sporty little car an absolute pleasure. The power output at 155Kw is only a slight increase from the previous generation but vast improvements have been made in the fuel economy. A three position chassis adjustment seals the deal as far as making this car pleasurable to drive under all circumstances.

The interior is the usual high quality expected from Volkswagen and is neat and functional and has an extensive range of options. The 17 inch alloy wheels provide a comfortable ride although low profile 18 inch wheels are an option.
